The Hanseatic League
Tradition, Hospitality and Maritime Experience
The Hanseatic League is forever linked with European history. The importance of commerce, strong member towns and many long-standing traditions are all vestiges associated with this once powerful trade alliance. Today seven Hanseatic-era cities breathe fresh life into their former merchant days; their fierce sense of independence further highlighted by the fact that cars registered here are still keeping the letter ‘H’ for Hanseatic city on their number plates. A Hanseatic theme route has been designed to link the historic and architectural landmarks which run through five of Germany’s federal states. From Bremen to Greifswald, the route spans some 400 kilometres and presents each urban destination in its own right while still featuring the theme aspects they share. Discover the days of old that rouse each Hanseatic town to excellence again. Appreciate their maritime atmospheres. And while doing so, take time to enjoy the top-class hospitality and famed cosiness that has become so typical of northern Germany. The Hanseatic theme route with its seven historic cities is one of the best ways to experience living history, inextricably combining impressions of the past, present and future with one another.
