The tide goes out twice a day, to reveal the fascinating and unique landscape which is otherwise hidden underneath the Wattenmeer - the sand flats. Experience the floor of the sea in person by taking a guided tour or by horse and carriage. Explanatory information boards inform, directly on site, about the flora and fauna and exhibitions at the visitors' centre explain how very special Schleswig-Holstein's Wattenmeer National Park is.
Another feature, the only in the world, are the ten 'Halligen', miniature islands, called "Swimming dreams" by Theodor Storm, which stand unprotected by dams in the middle of the mud flats. The Halligen are home to many rare birds and plant species, and are a rewarding destination for holiday makers.
