International musicals attest to the cultural diversity of Hamburg as indeed does John Neumeier's ballet company. Townhall (Rathaus), Kunsthalle art gallery, historic quarters of small traders' guilds (Krameramtswohnungen), national customs museum, Deutsches Zollmuseum, Köhlbrandbrücke bridge and the architectonic masterpiece Chilehaus are the landmarks on the route of a city tour. The baroque church of St. Michaelis is the emblem of Hamburg. With the Deutsches Schauspielhaus, Thalia Theater and Staatsoper, Hamburg has some 40 theatres. Local summer events: Kultursommer, Alstervergnügen (August), the open-air theatre Freilichttheater shows "Der Hamburger Jedermann" (July/August), Christmas markets and ring in the New Year in Hamburg Harbour.
Bremen shows changing exhibitions in the city's art gallery Kunsthalle. Bremen's Shakespeare Company offers the largest repertoire of the great master's works in Europe. Great attractions are the Roland Statue of 1404 and the statue of the fairytale characters, the travelling musicians of Bremen "Bremer Stadtmusikanten". The market square has a glorious backdrop of buildings constructed over eight centuries, one of which is the townhall (Rathaus) with its beautiful Renaissance façade (UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004). The Böttcherstraße, a treasure in North German brick architecture, is an expression of Bremen patronage: a street of high culture with art, shops, a casino and high-class restaurants. The town quarter Schnoorviertel, dating back to between the 15th and 17th Centuries is home today to pubs, boutiques, antique shops. - A novelty is the Neue Museum Weserburg: in the middle of the River Weser, on the Teerhof, is shown the most representative collective exhibition of modern art in Europe - no less representative: the Übersee-Museum Bremen, that is one of the internationally leading museums for natural history, ethnology and trading history.
