An attractive Hanseatic City with its very own seaside resort on the Baltic coast: This combination is unique for Germany. Rostock was one of the first Hanseatic cities to gain power and influences in the middle ages. Even today the historical city centre has a touch of Hanseatic flair. Visitors will find valuable evidence of North Germanys red brick Gothic everywhere in the historical city centre, but also evidence of Renaissance or Baroque. The old is carefully combined with the new. Whoever explores Rostock has to visit the St. Marien Church and the Lange Strasse, the Zum Heiligen Kreuz convent and the old city area between the churches St. Petri and the St. Nikolai. The river bank between the Rostock suburbs Groß Klein and Schmarl was transformed into a colourful sea of flowers for the International Garden Show (IGA) in 2003. Rostock offers nature pure but also museums and theatre, huge cruise ships in summer and an extensive zoo. Wide beaches stretching as far as the eye can see, waves, woods and rugged cliffs, harbour moles and fishing boats, well preserved fishermen's cottages and typical old pubs. The promenade with its lighthouse and the exclusive villas build in the seaside architecture style: That is Warnemünde. The regattas of the Warnemünde Week have a very good name nationwide and internationally. More than 2000 sailors and surfers compete every July before the coast of Warnemünde for world and European titles. Every year in August The Hanse Sail Rostock with breathtaking Tall Ships and activities of all sorts influences the flair at the coast and in the city harbour.
